Political Unrest
Erie County Legislator Arrested for Harassment, Resisting Arrest

September 13, 2000

An Erie County Legislator is in trouble with the law, after an incident at a Buffalo polling place. Police arrested Legislator Greg Olma after two election workers say Olma harassed them at a Fillmore Avenue polling place late Tuesday night.

The workers say Olma and a group of 14 men came into the polling place last night and demanded to see the election results. When the workers didn't hand over the results they say Olma harassed them and called them a racial slur.

"I've never encountered so much fear. He wanted the count of every vote," said Board of Elections Employee Adrea Newbern. "They told me.. they called us bleep bleep.. I was scared. I was just so scared," said Karen Gregory, another Board of Elections employee.

Police called to the scene say Olma struggled with officers, and witnesses say two men accompanying Olma assaulted a News 4 photographer. Olma is being charged with harassment and resisting arrest.
