Developer Shifting Site of Seniors Housing Plan

September 09, 1993, Buffalo News, South Edition

Pointing to neighborhood disapproval, developer Frank Parlato Jr. has
withdrawn his plan to build a senior citizens housing complex on the site
of the former Cliffside Restaurant at Route 20 and North Creek Road in the
Town of Hamburg.
Instead, he says, he hopes to build on a 46-acre site in Eden.
Parlato decided to abandon his plan for an $ 8 million, 200-unit,
three-story building in a parklike setting along Eighteen Mile Creek after
hearing complaints during a meeting he called with nearby residents last
week.
"Even though the zoning of this land would allow a project such as the one
proposed, I don't want to go ahead with any project that is not supported
by the community," Parlato said.
Parlato said the site under consideration in Eden is zoned commercial and
has no neighbors. He said he hopes to break ground there in the spring.
Parlato's proposed complex would have included health-care facilities,
provisions for adult day care, a store and a pharmacy, as well as a
restaurant to encourage relatives to visit residents there. He also offered
to provide access to nearby Buttermilk Falls.
Nearby residents raised objections to the Town Planning Board when Parlato
presented his plan Aug. 18. They raised concerns about traffic, safety
along the cliffs of Eighteen Mile Creek and the impact on the neighborhood.
