Chicago: The Swamis of the Vivekananda Vedanta Society of Chicago, a branch of the
Ramakrishna Order, are conducting a Hindu summer camp for children ages 7-15 at their 110-acre monastery and retreat in Ganges, Michigan, from August 5 to August 12.
Ganges is a two-and-a-half hour drive from Chicago, located near the western shores of Lake Michigan, near Holland, MI.
Swami Chidananda, the head of the Ganges monastery, will be in charge of the children's camp.
The Swamis will instruct children in the teachings of Hinduism, meditation and moral and spiritual values. The children will play games, learn crafts, exercise, and take part in camp activities.
There is room for 50 children, said Swami Varadananda, one of the Swamis conducting the camp.
The cost of the one week camp is $200, which includes lodging in the Ganges monastery and all vegetarian meals. There are also openings for "Junior Counselors" between the ages of 16 and 18, who will participate in activities and help supervise the children. There is no charge for Junior Counselors.
The Vivekananda Vedanta Society is a branch of the Ramakrishna Order, which was founded in 1897 by Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902). Swami Vivekananda introduced Hinduism to the West at the Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893. The camp is an annual event inaugurated by the late Swami Bhashyananda, who founded the Ganges monastery in 1966.
It's been tradition here for more than 25 years, said Swami Varadananda. A chance for children to learn about Hinduism and spiritual life, as well as have fun and meet new friends.
"If you can create good impressions in children, that will shape their character in later life. The impression you make when children are young go deep. It becomes part of their character, and its stays with them. It helps shape them throughout their life.
