CHICAGO : The Vivekanand Vedanta Society is planning to construct a new temple called The “Temple Universal” in Chicagoland to promote the ideals of Swami Vivekanand, the Hindu monk who introduced Vedanta philosophy to the Western world, more than a hundred years ago.
The Society has scheduled a musical concert with internationally famous Indian singer, Anup Jalota, to raise funds for the building of the temple. The performance is scheduled for Saturday, November 9, at Trinity High school in River Forest at 6 p.m.
The proceeds will go toward building the new “Temple Universal” under the spiritual direction of Swami Chidananda of the Ramakrishna Order of monks. “Please join us and hear Jalota and help enable us to succeed with our worthwhile cause,” said Swami Chidananda. The ticket price begins at $25.
Jalota has done more than 4000 live concert appearances in five continents, and has the distinction of having the most “Platinum” discs in the history of music records. He is making a special trip from Mumbai for this performance.
The ‘Temple Universal’ was conceived by Swami Vivekananda in America in 1894 to help the spiritual growth of man by the aid of all forms of religion which are recognized as “so many paths, leading to the same goal.”
The Swami was, in the 1890’s, virtually a lone Hindu in the West. Yet he was filled with great ideals and the desire to see others after his death work to realize them. Swami Vivekananda said, “Have faith, in yourselves, great convictions are the mothers of great deeds. Come, do something heroic!”
